Dr. Do Kyun Kim (D.K. Kim) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering at Seoul National University. He was working with Newcastle University (2019 – 2021) and PETRONAS University of Technology (2014 – 2019) as an Associate Professor. In addition, he was an advisor (= leader) of the Ocean and Ship Technology (OST) research group in UTP since 2015 and has been providing service as an external advisor since June 2019. In 2013, he received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from the Pusan National University (PNU), Republic of Korea. His research focuses on nonlinear structural mechanics and analysis in association with limit states and risk-based approaches for “ships and offshore structures”. He has authored more than 100 technical papers, including journals and proceedings. He is now interested in limit state-based structural analysis and design of subsea engineering in terms of floating structures, risers, pipelines and many others.
Dr Kim is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including two best paper awards from The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) (UK, 2009 and 2013), a OMAE best paper award from Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering (OOAE) under division of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), a best paper award from International Conference on Civil Offshore and Environmental Engineering (ICCOEE) (Malaysia, 2016), a gold medal award from International, Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX) (Malaysia, 2016), a gold medal award from Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE 2017) (Malaysia, 2017), an outstanding researcher award from PETRONAS University of Technology (UTP) (Malaysia, 2016), a best paper award from Federation of Busan Science and Technology (FOBST) (Korea, 2012), a commendation and scholarship award from NIPPON KAIJI KYOKAI (Class NK) (Japan, 2013), an excellence award of port logistics contest from Korea Maritime University (Korea, 2011), a Wakeham (for young scientist – under 30 years old) prize from RINA (UK, 2009), a best student award from Bureau Veritas (BV) (France, 2009), the Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust (The LRET) collegium winning award from University of Southampton (UoS) and Lloyd’s Register (LR) (UK, 2011) and others.
Dr Kim is also actively involved in the activities of a number of international academic societies. He is a Charted Engineer (CEng) in the Engineering Council and a member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA), a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME), a life member of The Society of Naval Architects of Korea (SNAK), a life member of Korean Society of Ocean Engineers (KSOE), a Companion member of The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), and a Graduate member of Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). He was also a member of IMarEST from 2014-2017. He is the Associate Editors of “Journal of Ship Research” (SCIE & Q1 Journal) by SNAME and “Ships and Offshore Structures” (SCIE & Q1 Journal) by Taylor and Francis Publisher. He is also the Editorial board member of "Ocean Engineering (SCIE & Q1, WOS Top 10% Journal), and “International Journal of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering (SCIE & Q2 Journal)” by Elsevier Publisher. He is also providing service as a reviewer from several journals provided by Elsevier, Springer, SAGE, Taylor & Francis, etc.
